2008 Old Settlers Entertainment Announced
The free nightly entertainment on the Courthouse Square for the 2008 Old Settlers Day and American Legion Festival was announced by Mike Redman, past president and OSD Association events chairman. “In our commitment to providing a variety of musical entertainment and focusing on northeast Indiana artists, this year will provide something for every listening taste”, Redman said. “There will be oldies, rock-n-roll, country, bluegrass, jazz, standards and big band.”
First up on Tuesday, June 24, “Spike and the Bulldogs” take us back to the days of the “Drive-In” and “Sock Hops”. Spike, aka Val Asay, and his buddies have been bringing back the “Oldies” since 1982, and have been a favorite to start the Old Settlers week's activities for many years. Redman said “Their music is from 1955 through 1966. It's what I grew up with and danced too in high school.”
“Nostalgia” plays five decades of “Rock ‘n' Roll”. It's a seven piece band of seasoned musicians that will perform on Wednesday, June 25. Picking up about the mid-60's, where Spike and the Bulldogs leave off, they play the “classic” rock. From the 60's British invasion, the midwest's Mellenkamp and Seger or almost anything you call rock (except “heavy-metal”) will be heard.
On Thursday, June 26 th , “Prime Time” will come to the stage. Chuck Surack, the owner of Sweetwater Sound, you know, that big new building across from North American Van Lines, is also an accomplished sax, flute and keyboard player. His trio plays jazz, standards and big band music. What tech-savvy trio wouldn't be backed by the “Mac-in-the-box”? This is a 1.67 ghz Titanium Apple Macintosh computer that provides a powerful backing band with a “kicking” beat and huge orchestration.
Friday, after the parade, you will be entertained by “Huckleberry Blue”. This bluegrass and country band is from Whitley County. Josh and Anna Copp, Brandon and Sara Marshall, Doug King and Johnny Morten make up this relative new group that has taken the local club scene by storm. They're appearing everywhere in the Fort Wayne area and have gathered a great following. Come on down and boogie with the local kids.
Saturday will again have “karaoke” with Denny and Deb Elkins. At 3:30 Saturday afternoon, kids ages 5 through 14 can compete for trophies and bragging rights. At 8:00 in the evening, those 15 and over will belt out their best for cash prizes. Mike said “You too can be a star, so be sure to enter these contests”.
Redman noted that “this year won't disappoint our crowd. The OSD Association is committed to finding new bands each year and showing the variety of fine musicians available right here in our home towns.”
